Tottenham Riots
Like millions of others in the country and across the world, I watched on television with astonishment and disappointment the scenes of the Tottenham riots. This is no way to protest against the loss of life; a fact agreed upon by the family of the gentleman who lost his life. It is important that the IPCC investigate the death as soon as possible to ensure that the family and friends of Mr Duggan understand why he was shot to death.
However, those responsible for the acts of criminality last night in Tottenham should be bough to justice. The actions of this small minority do not in any way help those suffering from a loss of life and do not reflect the majority of the community in Tottenham.
I have also read on a number of online forums and social media networks that this is the start of many other such riots across the country with most notable mentions of Lozells and Handsworth.
I have lived through the three riots of Lozells and Handsworth in 1981, 1985 and 2005. However, we are a far stronger community today than ever before. We are a far more united community than ever before and we will stand united against any form of such tension in our community.
I can understand that when people see the scenes of Tottenham, they automatically start to link them to Lozells and Handsworth, but we understand the impact of a riot in our community and have still not recovered from the loss of life that occurred in 81, 85 and 2005.
I was pleased to have attended the Handsworth Carnival today that returned to Handsworth Park. It was a peaceful, enjoyable affair with the occasional showers not dampening the colourful atmosphere.
There has been fantastic progress since 2005 in Lozells and Handsworth with all sections of the community coming together to address various issues affecting us. Despite the difficult economic environment and substantial cuts to front line services, we continue to strive to make Lozells and Handsworth a safer and better place for all to live.
I recall the misery of 85 in Handsworth but also the long post-mortem involving the whole city and indeed the country, collectively recognising there had been injustices in our area. I recall being depressed at what looked like an unjustified repeat in 2005 but recovered my usual optimism about Handsworth when I saw how people – neighbours, friends and strangers – pulled together in the aftermath. I’d like to think – without detracting from your rebuke of the rioters – that the larger community of Tottenham, even in these hard times or perhaps because of them, will do the same. I feel, without being over-relaxed as to the impossibility of a similar series of incidents in Handsworth/Lozells, that a larger than ever majority of us do not see civil disorder as a solution to the many challenges we face.
Waseem, yet again a time to be proud of our Handsworth and Lozells Communities! The excellent relationshipsn we have with one another and not least with our Local Police Unit.
