Local Schools Performance Improving

I was very pleased to learn that the local schools that many of the pupils that live in my ward attend have, once again, done very well this year, exceeding the Birmingham and national average on many indicators.

The key indicator is young people % achieving 5+ A*-C GCSEs (or equivalent) including English and Maths GCSE.

On this indicator, leaving aside the grammar schools (which have done very well, as expected), three local schools have exceeded the Birmingham average (58%) and national average (58%) this year – Aston Manor (63%), Broadway (60%) and Holyhead (63%).

Looking at the % achieving 5+ A*-C GCSEs (or equivalent)   [ie. not including English & Maths]

Handsworth Wood Girls’ topped the table with 95%, but most of the other schools in our area also exceeded the Birmingham and national average on this indicator.

Another important indicator is the % of pupils making expected progress in English and Maths. Our schools have done very well on this indicator, particular for Maths.

Aston Manor, Broadway, Hamstead Hall, Handsworth Wood Girls and Holyhead have exceeded the Birmingham and National average for Maths. Holte exceeded the Birmingham average.

Handsworth Wood Girls got ‘top marks’ for Maths with 83% of pupils making expected progress.

For English, Aston Manor, Broadway and Holyhead have exceeded the Birmingham and national average. Aston Manor got ‘top marks’ with 89% of pupils making expected progress.
