Letter to Chief Executive of Birmingham City Council & Chief Constable of West Midlands Police Regarding Proposed EDL Demonstration
Dear Mr Hughes & Mr Sims,
You may be aware that I wrote to the Home Secretary last week requesting her intervention to ban the proposed demonstration by the EDL in Birmingham this weekend. I have today had information to state that the Government doesn’t have powers to ban a ‘static’ demonstration.
In light of the fact that the demonstration is unfortunately going to take place with the venue identified by many being the Victoria Square in Birmingham City Centre, I am writing to request that you consider changing the proposed location. Victoria Square is the most prominent location in the City Centre and one of the busiest. One of the reasons for my opposition to the EDL demonstrating in Birmingham is to ensure that there is not a repeat of the events that took place in the City Centre when the EDL visited Birmingham in 2009. We as a City cannot afford any further issues erupting on Saturday following the incidents in 2009 and the most recent disturbances across the City Centre and neighbourhoods in the North West of the City.
I am also concerned with the proposed counter demonstration by UAF. I have in the past supported UAF activity and may support their future activities but I feel that their strategy to counter demonstrate the EDL is inappropriate and they should leave the West Midlands Police to deal with any individual inciting racial hatred as I am sure that the West Midlands Police will have appropriate resources in place to tackle any relevant issues that may occur on Saturday.
I would urge you to look into this matter urgently and seek a solution where, if both groups are allowed to demonstrate, they do so in a peaceful manner well away from each other and away from prominent locations in the City Centre.
