Celebrating 10 years of Angelsey Playgroup with Lord Mayor of Birmingham & Khalid Mahmood MP
I had huge pleasure in welcoming newly elected Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr. Anita Ward to my ward to join celebrations of the 10th year anniversary of the Playgroup at Angelsey School. I was also pleased that local Member of Parliament – Khalid Mahmood joined the celebrations.
The Playgroup was first opened in 1999 by support received from the National Lottery Funding. In 2008, the playgroup achieved an outstanding inspection for leadership and management, education and care, language and literacy, mathematics, and transition and bilingual children.
The event was a highly enjoyable affair with many members of the local community joining young people and children to celebrate. Dhol players welcomed the Lord Mayor and I was extremely pleased to see many other forms of entertainment including food stalls, henna, raffle, tombola, count the sweets, basketball, football, adult games, bouncing castle, clothes, nail art, balloon modelling, face painting, first aid, fire fighters, etc.
I have been very impressed with Ms Hughes [headteacher] and her team at Angelsey School and their contribution to the development of the local community is second to none.
Shabnum Bi, a local community activist, is the lead at the Playgroup. Her commitment and dedication to the playgroup is outstanding. It is people like Shabnum who will continue to play a crucial role in uniting our communities in Lozells and Handsworth during the tough times.
