Birmingham City Council forced to back down on off-shoring of Service Birmingham jobs to India
The City Council, meeting yesterday, considered a Motion proposed by the Labour Group regarding the off-shoring of Service Birmingham jobs to India.
For months, the Labour Group has been putting pressure on the City Council to overturn a decision originally taken in November 2010 by the Cabinet. The initiative to off-shore a possible 74 jobs, mainly high-value, knowledge-based jobs, was originally taken to reduce the cost of the Service Birmingham contract in line with agreements with the City Council.
In proposing the Motion, Councillor Sir Albert Bore (Labour, Ladywood) argued that “Service Birmingham had reneged on their promise to provide additional jobs for Birmingham and “were undermining one of the challenges for the City Council to attract and retain skilled people”.
Although the original Motion was amended by the Conservative/Lib Dem coalition to state only that “This Council would welcome any initiative by Service Birmingham to review the proposal to offshore Service Birmingham Applications”, a promise was given that a cap would be placed on the number of jobs to be off-shored, namely 55.
Councillor Sir Albert Bore made it clear that “55 jobs to be off-shored were 55 too many” and that “the City Council should be more concerned with protecting and creating high-value and knowledge-based businesses, rather than off-shore such jobs to India when Birmingham’s unemployment rate remains significantly above the national average and is the second highest of the eight core cities.”
In seconding the motion, Councillor Ian Ward (Labour, Shard End) added: “The Council’s commitment to procure jobs locally is being undermined by an agreement with Service Birmingham to procure jobs in India. We have to question what confidence the Conservative/Lib Dem coalition has in Birmingham and its people.”
